PEOPLE|PLANET|PEACE

Peace and the environment are inextricably linked. Amid the prevailing security and environmental challenges, stakeholders dedicated to peace and environmental causes at the local, regional, and global levels must engage in a community-led conversation that promotes a greener, more peaceful and sustainable Africa. The Africa Peace and Environment Summit aims to provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and action to address the interconnectedness of peacebuilding and environmental sustainability across the African continent.

APES 2 2025 SUMMIT

The Second Africa Peace and Environment Summit (APES 2) was successfully convened from September 2nd to 4th, 2025, at The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, bringing together voices committed to advancing peace and environmental sustainability across the continent. Building on the momentum of the inaugural 2024 Summit, APES 2 was held under the timely and compelling theme, “People | Planet | Peace: Intertwining Human and Planetary Wellness.”

The Summit attracted broad participation from across Africa and beyond, with 227 participants attending in person . Participants represented a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including policymakers, scholars, government representatives, peace and environmental practitioners, religious leaders, youth, civil society actors, and community representatives. This diversity enriched the dialogue and ensured that conversations reflected both grassroots realities and policy-level perspectives.

Over the three days, participants engaged in deep and reflective deliberations on the interconnectedness of peace, environmental protection, and human well-being. Discussions explored how ecological degradation, climate stress, and resource conflicts intersect with social inequality and instability, while also highlighting innovative approaches to ecological peacebuilding rooted in African contexts and indigenous knowledge systems.

The Summit concluded with a strong and unified call to action, synthesizing key insights and recommendations that emerged from the discussions. At its core, the outcome of APES 2 was a renewed and collective commitment to restoring harmony between people and the planet. Participants emphasized the importance of collaborative action at local, regional, and continental levels, alongside a firm resolve to formally integrate ecological peacebuilding into Africa’s sustainable development agenda.

APES 2 reaffirmed the growing recognition that lasting peace in Africa cannot be achieved without environmental stewardship, just as planetary wellbeing depends on inclusive and peaceful societies. The Summit marked a significant step forward in strengthening partnerships, shaping policy discourse, and advancing practical pathways toward a more peaceful and sustainable future for the continent.
